Istanbul
Day 1
Transfer from the airport to the hotel
You’ll arrive at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport and transfer to your city centre hotel. The sightseeing programme begins in earnest tomorrow but we’d encourage you to explore on your own if your arrival time permits. Overnight in Istanbul.
Day 2
Istanbul City Tour
Visit Grand Bazaar
Today we aim to show you the highlights of Istanbul, beginning with the fascinating Topkapi Palace. Once it was the home of the Ottoman Sultans and exploring the different corners of this sprawling place is a delight. From its terraces, you’ll enjoy the view over the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn. Hagia Sophia, centuries old and oozing charm, has been a church, mosque and museum in its long lifetime. We’ll learn some of its secrets and admire its fabulous architectural detail before heading over to the nearby Blue Mosque. This is one of Istanbul’s most famous sights, winning its nickname thanks to the blue Iznik tiles that grace its interior. After lunch, we tackle Istanbul’s famous Grand Bazaar. Inside, a labyrinthine network of passageways leads to something like 4000 stalls. Getting a little lost is all part of the fun. Overnight in Istanbul. (Breakfast, Lunch)

Ankara
Day 3
Visit Egyptian Market
Bosphorus Cruise
By car: Istanbul - Ankara
This morning, we begin at another well-known market, this time the Egyptian Bazaar. It’s often referred to as the Spice Bazaar but you’ll see piles of saffron, dried apricots, dates, nuts and Turkish Delight as well as all those spices. Its location close to the Bosphorus is handy for our next excursion: a boat trip up the river. With Europe on one bank and Asia on the other, the ride is a chance to get acquainted with Istanbul’s unique geography as well as admire some of the many waterfront palaces. After lunch, we depart Istanbul for our next destination, the Turkish capital Ankara, which we’ll reach in time for dinner. Overnight in Ankara. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Cappadocia
Day 4
Anatolian Civilisations Museum
Mausoleum of Kemal Atatürk
By car: Ankara - Cappadocia
Visit to an underground city
First up is a chance to see some of Turkey’s most precious archaeological treasures in Ankara’s Anatolian Civilisations Museum. We’ll admire its collections of art, jewellery and pottery as we learn more about those who shaped Turkey’s past. Afterwards, we’ll call in at the Mausoleum of Kemal Atatürk, where we can pay our respects to the founder and first president of the Turkish Republic. After lunch, we’ll leave Ankara bound for Cappadocia. This area is known for its caves and subterranean dwellings, so we’ll begin with a visit to an underground city. Later, we’ll check in to our hotel and have dinner. Overnight in Cappadocia. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 5
Sunrise from a hot air balloon (optional)
Guided hike in the valleys
It’s worth rising before dawn in this very special place as it means you’ll get to see the sunrise from a hot air balloon. Burners lit, you’ll rise over orchards of apricot trees, drifting above tranquil valleys where curious rock formations known as fairy chimneys line meandering streams. Optional excursion. Our standard programme for the day will start as usual at about 10 am. Those who are not participating in the optional excursion will be able to discuss their options with the guide, you might simply want to drive to the place where the balloons are launched, and enjoy spectacular views from the ground. We will have the whole day to let Cappadocia’s natural beauty work its magic. We’ll take a guided hike through some of its prettiest valley landscapes: Avcilar, Pasabag and Devrent. Each has a distinct character but we know from experience it will be hard to choose a favourite. Wind and rain have worn away the volcanic tuff to leave an almost lunar landscape which will blow you away. We’ll stop at Uchisar for a quick photo stop and at Goreme’s cave church complex to see some of the colourful frescoes. Overnight in Cappadocia. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Konya - Pamukkale
Day 6
By car: Cappadocia - Konya
Caravanserai of Sultan Han
Visit to the Mevlâna Museum
By car: Konya - Pamukkale
Terraces of Pamukkale
This morning we set out following the route of the Ancient Silk Road. Bound for Konya, we stop off at the 13th century caravanserai of Sultan Han. Travellers making long distance journeys along the Silk Road used wayside inns such as this, the largest mediaeval caravanserai in the country and a splendid example of Seljuk architecture. Upon reaching Konya, we pay a visit to the Mevlâna Museum recognisable by its distinctive turquoise dome. It is the mausoleum of a Persian Sufi mystic called Celaleddin Rumi and a former lodge of the Whirling Dervishes. Our guide will recount a little of its history, after which we’ll get back on the road to reach Pamukkale in time for dinner. Overnight in Pamukkale. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Ephesus - Izmir
Day 7
By car: Pamukkale - Ephesus
The ruins at Ephesus
Visit leather factory in Selcuk
The home of the Virgin Mary
By car: Ephesus - Izmir
The hot springs at Hierapolis near Pamukkale were first used for bathing over 2000 years ago. A temple at Ancient Hierapolis predates that by several centuries. Today, you’ll find the calcite-encrusted terraces of Pamukkale, which translates from Turkish as "cotton castle", inside the archaeological site. Together, this unique combination of natural wonder and archaeological site forms a UNESCO World Heritage listing. Equally splendid are the ruins at Ephesus, our next stop. Stroll along its 2000 year old marble streets as you explore its theatre and library. Leaving the past behind, we head to a leather factory in Selcuk to learn more about Turkish leather. Not far from Selcuk there’s a stone house which lays claim to have once been the home of the Virgin Mary. It’s been a popular place of pilgrimage for decades though the Catholic Church doesn’t officially recognise it. After we’ve had a look around we’ll continue to Izmir, Turkey’s third largest city. Overnight in Izmir. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 8
Transfer from the hotel to the airport
Today our time in Turkey has come to an end; we’ll transfer to Izmir Airport in good time for your departing flight. (Breakfast)
