Day 2. Yerevan - Ejmiatsin - Zvarnots - Yerevan
You’ll begin by getting to know Armenia’s charming capital, Yerevan. This morning’s tour will encompass the main sights in the city, including the impressive Singing Fountains in Republic Square and the fascinating market stalls of the Vernissage with their mixture of objets d’art, Soviet memorabilia and local crafts. Also on the programme is a visit to the Matenadaran where ancient manuscripts are housed and the Yerevan Cascade, which offers panoramic views across the city and beyond from the top of its many flights of steps. Later, you’ll drive out to Echmiadzin where you’ll be able to see Armenia’s oldest cathedral and on to Zvartnots, home to a ruined 7th century cathedral listed by UNESCO. Return to Yerevan in time for dinner. Overnight Yerevan. (B, D)
Day 3. Yerevan - Garni - Geghard - Yerevan
Garni and Geghard are usually combined into one excursion as they are geographically close together; however, in style they couldn’t be more different. Garni is the more unusual, an Ionic Greco-Roman pagan temple initially constructed in the 1st century AD but restored in the 1970s after a 17th century earthquake left it in ruins. Geghard is a UNESCO-listed monastery which was founded by Gregory the Illuminator in the 4th century. What you see today dates from the early 14th century but the spring that you can visit is the original sacred spring in Gregory’s cave. After our visits, we’ll drive back to the city and the rest of the day is yours to explore on your own. Overnight Yerevan. (B, D)
Day 4. Yerevan - Khor Virap - Noravank - Areni - Yerevan
Khor Virap’s location is pretty special - located very close to the Turkish border you often have wonderful views of Mount Ararat in the distance. The monastery is photogenic in its own right and fascinating to inspect close up. Noravank’s location is even more spectacular. The anticipation builds as we turn down a narrow canyon. The buildings of this monastery complex feature some very intricate carvings. If you have a head for heights, climb the steep, open steps built onto the front of the church to gaze back along the valley from a first-floor vantage point. Areni’s our last stop today. This place is known for its viticulture and we’ll make a stop at one of Armenia’s top wineries to learn about the production process and of course enjoy a tasting. Overnight Yerevan. (B, D)
Day 5. Yerevan - Sevan - Dilijan
Sevanavank monastery is built on the top of a small hill. You’ll climb 243 steps to the top and the reward, once you’ve caught your breath, is the incredible view across the lake. The monastery itself is very pretty and in its churchyard you’ll be wowed by the beautifully carved khatchkhars which look a little like gravestones. It’s a short drive to Dilijan, a spa town and our base for the next couple of nights. You can amuse yourself in the local Geological Museum and Art Gallery which exhibits archaeological pieces and works of art or perhaps visit one of the craft workshops that are dotted about the town. Overnight Dilijan. (B, D)
Day 6. Dilijan - Haghpat - Sanahin - Lermontovo - Goshavank - Dilijan
This morning we set off for the Debed Canyon. Haghpat and Sanahin monasteries face off against each other and when built, there was a rivalry between them. In fact, Sanahin’s name means “older than that one”. Haghpat itself was built back in the 9th century; check out the holes in the floor designed to keep wine at a cool temperature. Inside Sanahin, don’t be too concerned about showing a lack of respect if you walk over the gravestones on the floor - it’s actually considered good luck as it’s believed the act of stepping on them frees the dead from the burden of sin. The village of Lermontovo, named after the Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov, who’s often called "the poet of the Caucasus" is our next stop and we fit in a visit to the 12th century monastery of Goshavank before returning to Dilijan in time for dinner. Overnight Dilijan. (B, D)
Day 7. Dilijan - Noratus - Selim Pass - Jermuk
It’s time to depart Dilijan this morning and our first stop is at Noratus Cemetery. This mediaeval graveyard has the largest concentration of khatchkhars in the entire country. Large and small, embellished with carvings of crosses and weathered with moss and lichen, they are fascinating to explore. Legend has it that when Tamerlane planned an attack, locals placed helmets on top and propped swords up to make them appear like soldiers from a distance. Departing Noratus, we will cross the Selim Pass, calling in at the 14th century Orbelian's Caravanserai and head for Jermuk. This attractive mountain spa town is our base for the next two nights. Overnight Jermuk. (B, D)
Day 8. Jermuk - Tatev - the Khndzoresk Caves - Jermuk
Continuing on, Tatev is our destination today. This hilltop monastery is reached via a flight on the Wings of Tatev, the world’s longest cable car. The journey across the valley is spectacular and the monastery’s remoteness is reinforced as you approach. In the complex itself, seek out a column tucked away in one of the courtyards which historically has helped to predict earthquakes and approaching enemy armies. Departing Tatev, we’ll soon reach the town of Goris from where we visit the nearby Khndzoresk Caves. Until relatively recently, these caves were inhabited. Once we’ve had a good look we’ll set off back to Jermuk. Overnight Jermuk. (B, D)
Day 9. Jermuk - Yerevan
Today we journey back to Yerevan. We’ll make a stop after about an hour at the church of St Jacob in a village called Vernashen. Inside there’s a small museum whose exhibits are devoted to education, art, mediaeval science and the history of the ancient Gladzor University which it’s thought was located at Tanahat Monastery about three miles away. It was also an important centre for calligraphy and hundreds of manuscripts were created there. Afterwards, we’ll depart for Yerevan, where you’ll spend your final evening. (B, D)
Day 10. Yerevan
Today’s departure day and it’s time to return to the airport in good time to catch your flight home. (B)

Yerevan
Nicknamed the “pink city” on account of the widespread use of rose-coloured tuff rock in its architecture, the Armenian capital was founded way back in 782 BC. Modern Yerevan occupies a commanding position in the Ararat Valley straddling the banks of the River Razdan. The view of the city from the Akhtanak Bridge which crosses the river gorge is sure to be a highlight of any stay in Armenia.

Sanahin
Connected to Alaverdi by a cable car said to have the steepest ascent of any in the former USSR, Sanahin village houses a 10th century monastery complex which is UNESCO-listed. The village is the birthplace of aeroplane builder Artem Mikoyan, one of the creators of Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG, and also long-serving politician Anastas Mikoyan, who played a major role in the Cuban Missile Crisis in the 1960s.

Dilijan
Little Switzerland as it’s dubbed is a pretty resort and spa town located in the Dilijan National Park. Surrounded by the forested hills and Alpine meadows of the Lesser Caucasus and strung out along the banks of the Aghstev River, its charming old town centred on the restored Sharambeyan Street is delightfully brimming with craft workshops, an art gallery and a museum. It’s the perfect base for exploring the surrounding countryside on foot or by mountain bike.

Sevan
Lake Sevan is a popular summer beach resort. Visitors flock to its shores to enjoy the country’s only beaches and to take to the water for swimming, jet skiing, windsurfing and sailing. It has the distinction of being the largest lake in Armenia and lies at an altitude of 1900 metres above sea level. Unsurprisingly, it’s a good place to eat fish, providing 90% of the country’s fish catch and 80% of the crayfish caught. There’s also a mediaeval monastery on the lake’s sole island.

Zvarnots
The collapse of this ruined 7th century cathedral located just a few kilometres from Yerevan’s international airport remains a mystery. It was built at the place where King Trdat and St Gregory the Illuminator were supposed to have met. Built by Catholicos Nerses III, or Catholicos the Builder, and consecrated in 652, its remains were uncovered at the start of the 20th century. Excavations revealed a winery and palace as well as the cathedral. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cathedral was depicted on the first 100 AMD banknotes.

Echmiatsin
Renamed Vagharshapat a couple of decades ago, this is Armenia’s fourth largest city. The base of the Armenian Catholicos, it’s packed full of churches and has not one but five monuments listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO: the Cathedral of Echmiatsin, St Hripsime Cathedral, St Gayane Church, Shoghakat Church and Zvartnots Cathedral. If that’s not enough, there are also several interesting museums including the Khrimian Art Museum and the Alex and Marie Manoogian Treasury House.

Noravank
With its backdrop of the terracotta cliffs of the Amaghu River gorge, this monastery must have one of the most picturesque settings in all of Armenia. The monastery features the two-storey Holy Mother of God church, Surb Astvatsatsin as well as St Gregory’s chapel with its vaulted hall. In the 13th and 14th centuries this was the home of Syunik’s bishops and therefore an important religious centre.

Tatev
The monastery at Tatev is reached by the “Wings of Tatev” cable car, opened in 2010 and the world’s longest non-stop double track cable car. This 9th century Armenian Apostolic monastery dominates a basalt plateau overlooking the Vorotan River gorge. In the past, the University of Tatev was located there, making significant contributions to the fields of science, religion and philosophy before its importance waned in the 15th century.

Goris
The attractive town of Goris is located in central Armenia and is famed for its thousands of rock-hewn dwellings. It has a number of important tourist attractions, among them the Axel Bakunts Museum dedicated to the life and work of one of Armenia’s greatest writers of prose and its fruit-flavoured vodka. Nearby, there are a trio of fascinating monasteries: Tatev, Bgheno-Noravank and Tsitsernavank.

Areni
Archaeological excavations at Areni-1 in 2007 uncovered several interesting finds, notably three pots containing human skulls. Inside one was what’s thought to be the oldest known brain tissue on the planet. Other discoveries included the world’s oldest leather shoe and also the earliest known winery, over six thousand years old. Today, the village of Areni is still known for its wine production, though technically the bulk of the wine is from nearby Getap. Close by is the church of St Astvatsatsin, built in 1321 on a plateau overlooking Areni and the Arpa River.

Khor Virap
North east of Garni, higher up the Azat Gorge, sits the Geghard Monastery. Its cathedral was constructed in 1215 though the monastery had been around for hundreds of years before that. Geghard is also known for its excellent acoustics. Climb the stone steps to the left of the church and enter a chamber. The sounds reverberate such that a single voice can sound like a choir. Geghard is predated by Airivank, translating as “cave monastery” and there are plenty of caves to explore in the vicinity though sadly nothing remains of the original monastery.

Garni
One of Armenia’s must-see sights, the archaeological site of Garni features the remains of the temple and Roman-style baths built in 76 AD on the foundation of stone walls constructed several thousand years earlier. The temple is dedicated to the goddess of the sun, Mythra, and its design follows the theories of geometry laid out by Greeks Plato and Pythagoras. But there’s more. Hike the canyons of the Goghi or Azat River that meet at Garni and watch the sun light up the stone of the temple, one of the most beautiful sights in the country.

Haghpat
Along with nearby Sanahin Monastery, the Haghpat Monastery shares a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. This mediaeval monastery was founded by Queen Khosrovanuysh around 976 and occupies a site halfway up a hillside where it could offer its monks privacy and solitude. As a result of this lofty location it’s often atmospherically shrouded in cloud. At its heart is the Cathedral of Surb Nishan; other important structures include the domed church of St Gregory.
